What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)?

Launched as part of the "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" campaign, SSY is a government-backed small savings scheme dedicated to the girl child. It currently offers one of the highest interest rates among all fixed-income schemes (higher than PPF and FDs).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Who can open: Parents or legal guardians of a girl child.
  • Age Limit: The girl must be below 10 years of age at the time of account opening.
  • Limit: Maximum 2 accounts per family (one for each daughter). Exception allowed for twins/triplets.

The 21-Year Maturity Rule Explained

This is the most confusing part of SSY.
Maturity is NOT when the child turns 21.
Maturity happens 21 years after opening the account.

However, you only need to deposit money for the first 15 years. For the remaining 6 years (Year 16 to 21), you do not deposit anything, but your accumulated corpus continues to earn interest.

Example:
If you open an account when your daughter is 5 years old:
• You deposit money until she is 20 (15 years).
• The account matures when she is 26 (21 years from opening).

Tax Benefits (EEE Status)

Like PPF, SSY falls under the "Exempt-Exempt-Exempt" category, making it a powerful wealth builder.

  • Investment: Tax deduction under Section 80C (up to ₹1.5 Lakhs).
  • Interest: Fully tax-free.
  • Maturity: Fully tax-free.

Premature Withdrawal Rules

The money is locked in, but the government allows withdrawals for the girl's future needs:

1. For Higher Education

Once the girl turns 18 years old or passes the 10th standard, you can withdraw up to 50% of the balance for her higher education fees.

2. For Marriage

The account can be closed prematurely for the purpose of the girl's marriage, provided she has attained the age of 18 years.

Disclaimer

Interest Rate: The SSY interest rate is revised quarterly by the government. The calculator assumes a constant rate for the entire tenure.

Maturity: If the girl gets married before the 21-year maturity period (after turning 18), the account must be closed. No interest is payable after marriage.
